Cabernet Franc

WINE #1

2021 Boundary Breaks
Cabernet Franc
Finger Lakes, New York

Boundary Breaks founder Bruce Murray took a bold leap at 50. Leaving his publishing career behind, he purchased 120 acres in the Finger Lakes (previously corn and soybeans) in 2007, drawn to the region's potential for cool-climate grapes. Recognizing the unique terroir, he believed it could rival established Riesling regions like Germany and Alsace. While Boundary Breaks grows other varieties, Riesling remains a focus, aiming to showcase the Finger Lakes' potential for world-class expressions.

This wine offers aromas of blackberry and cinnamon, which meld with crushed herbs on the nose. There’s a pleasing depth of blackberry and cherry flavors on the palate that are lifted by a violet tone. An ideal pairing with grilled meats, hearty stews, or pastas with red sauce.

This wine received 90 points from Wine Enthusiast.

WINE #2

2021 Lightwell Survey The Weird Ones are Wolves
Cabernet Franc, Petit Manseng
Shenandoah, Virginia

Lightwell Survey, a Virginia winery, sheds a fresh light on the traditional wine scene. Their focus lies in crafting small batches of lively reds, dense whites, and even unique blends that defy categorization. Eschewing preconceived notions and traditional aspirations, they strive for a distinctive approach, aiming for the bullseye but with a delightful twist. Founded in 2015 with a first harvest alongside Early Mountain Vineyards in Madison, VA, Lightwell Survey continues to explore both familiar and unconventional territory, offering wines that are constantly pushing boundaries.

Crafted with a unique blend of 85% Cabernet Franc and 15% Petit Manseng, this wine bursts with life on the nose. Vibrant red fruits take center stage, followed by surprising hints of fresh white cherry and strawberry on the palate. Intriguing notes of lavender and white pepper add a touch of complexity, making for a truly memorable drinking experience. This wine’s vibrancy calls for bold pairings like grilled lamb, aged cheese, or even a spicy sausage dish.

WINE #3

2021 Shady Lane Cellars Franc ‘n’ Franc
Cabernet Franc, Blaufränkisch, Merlot
Leelanau Peninsula, Michigan

Founded in 1881, Shady Lane estate began as a 100-acre farm. By 1988, Bill Stouten and Joe O'Donnell transformed it into a vineyard, crafting their first wines in a reconstructed building. In 1999, the tasting room, once a chicken coop, welcomed visitors. Acquired by Richard Fortune's daughters in 2013, Kasey Wierzba, the new Executive Winemaker with Napa Valley experience, shaped Shady Lane Cellars' current style.

This expressive wine unfolds with hints of toasty oak, ripe cherry, and a touch of black pepper. Medium-bodied with a lush finish, it offers a delightful balance. This versatile wine pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes, from earthy mushrooms and succulent lamb to juicy, rare steak and flavorful roast chicken.
