Boundary Breaks Winery - Finger Lakes, NY

about the producer

A career shift at 50 led Bruce Murray from the world of New York City publishing to the fertile grounds of the Finger Lakes AVA. In 2007, he purchased a 120-acre plot on Seneca Lake, transforming former soybean and cornfields into a vineyard. The transition, as Bruce says, felt natural: "It offered a similar level of risk and challenge I craved."

Growing up near the Finger Lakes, Bruce recognized the region's unique potential for cool-climate Vitis vinifera grapes. "The climate here hits a sweet spot," he explains, "allowing these grapes to flourish and produce exceptional wines, particularly Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Cabernet Franc."

While Boundary Breaks offers various exciting wines, Riesling takes center stage. Bruce aspires to create Rieslings that rival the best from Germany and Alsace. "Historically," he says, "the world's greatest Rieslings come from regions with similar climates – Germany, Austria, France. Our wines offer a distinct expression, but they belong in that same conversation."

WINE #1

2022 Boundary Breaks Dry Riesling #239

This bright and floral white wine boasts a captivating nose of honeysuckle and acacia, leading into flavors of lemon peel and crisp yellow apple on the palate. A zingy finish keeps it refreshing. This wine can be cellared for 3+ years or enjoyed now. A dry German-style riesling that exemplifies the Finger Lakes style.

WINE #2

2022 Boundary Breaks Chardonnay

Bright notes of lemon, peach, and cantaloupe, complemented by subtle hints of ginger and cream. This unoaked Chardonnay showcases the purity of the grape, emphasizing fresh fruit characteristics and a clean, vibrant acidity, typical of the cool-climate Finger Lakes terroir. And it’s very versatile with food - easy to pair with just about any lighter fare!

WINE #3

2021 Cabernet Franc

On the nose, aromas of juicy blackberries intertwine with a touch of cinnamon, hinting at warmth and complexity. Subtle fresh herbs, violet, and cherry complete the intriguing palate. This is a medium-bodied Loire-style Cabernet Franc pairs beautifully with meat dishes (especially lamb!) and pastas with rich sauces.
