Thursday, September 11: Quinta do Vallado at The Barrel Room Rockridge
Taste the wines of Quinta do Vallado with João Ribeiro from 5-8pm! We will be pouring the 2011 Douro Red, 2010 Touriga Nacional, 2011 Douro Reserva, and the 10 year Tawny Port in a special tasting flight for $20.
The Quinta do Vallado estate, now in its sixth generation, has been family-owned since 1716. It was originally owned by the legendary Doña Antonia Adelaide Ferreira. Today the winery is owned by João Ferreria Alvares Ribeiro, Francisco Ferreira and Francisco Olazabal. It is one of the oldest and most famous “Quintas” in the Douro region. Two thirds of the vineyards are planted in terraces with a single row of vines and pruned according to the double cordon system. The old vines, which make up almost 40% of the vineyards are at least 80 years old. A new state-of-the-art winery was built in 1997 and a newly built, ultra-modern hotel was completed in 2012 making Quinta do Vallado a travel destination in the Douro Valley.
Monday, September 29: La Vida Local at The Barrel Room San Francisco!
Join us for a “Locals’ Love-In” where we’ll be pairing Norcal wines with local cheeses and chutneys. We’ll be trying five different cheeses from the region and discovering which wines love them and how to expertly add chutneys to this party. This is a curated seated event, where each person will get their own pairing flight of these local delights. Over the course of the evening we’ll discuss what works and what doesn’t and how to create perfect pairings at home. You’ll try new cheeses, chutneys and wine. You’ll leave merry.
Come and learn the tricks of the trade from our wine, chutney, and cheese pros: The Barrel Room owner and WSET Level 3 Advanced certified sommelier Sarah Trubnick, McQuade’s Chutney founder Alison McQuade, and founder of Curds and Cuts and cheesemonger Marshka Kiera.
This event will take place from 7-9pm. Tickets are available here and must be pre-purchased; the event is closed to walk-ins.
Sherry is a little-understood wine that is currently experiencing a resurgence throughout the world. One of Spain’s most renowned creations, Sherry in all of its forms is a classic food pairing wine that adds a delicious and exciting dimension to any dinner course.
Join us at The Barrel Room Rockridge for a special dinner of perfectly paired dishes that will highlight the different types of Sherry, featuring the wines of Alexander Jules. A Sherry flight will also be available, sans pairing menu. Alex Russan, owner of Alexander Jules, will be on hand to discuss his wines and answer any questions about the fascinating world of Sherry.
Alex Jules Russan started the Alexander Jules label after having worked in specialty coffee and being a sherry lover for many years. As an independent bottler, he’s trying to ‘highlight’ outstanding casks that are normally being blended away. Alexander Jules stresses the minimum of treatments to the wine (fining, filtering, stabilizing, etc.). The wines are essentially bottled en rama, with just a cellulose plate filtration at time of saca (May 2013) and a 1 micron filtration at time of bottling. None of the wines are fined, cold stabilized or exposed to active carbon.
This is a unique and extraordinary event that will change the way you view Sherry!
